COSTA RICA Globalization and Community Health Summer Field School
6 week Program, June 19 - July 31, 2005

About the Program and Program Site

Learn qualitative and quantitative methods for applied anthropology and
health disciplines.
Explore the changing face of health and healthcare in communities undergoing
the rapid social, cultural and economic change associated with
globalization. Experience living adjacent to one of the last remaining cloud
forest preserves in Central America.

Monteverde, the program site, is located in the highlands of northwestern
Costa Rica, an area of mountainous slopes and verdant cloud forests.
Monteverde is famous for its role in creating the Monteverde Reserve
Complex, a collection of private and public preserves protecting more than
100,000 acres of endangered tropical forest.

The Monteverde Institute is a non-profit educational and research
association, which works in partnership with universities around the world.
It is committed to the Monteverde community, and provides local educational,
cultural and social programs.  The research topics for the 2005
Globalization and Community Health Summer Field School include:
nutrition/food Security, HIV/AIDS, migrant worker health, tobacco and drug
use among youth, and reproductive health.

Housing

Program participants will live for five and one half weeks with local Costa
Rican families who have been carefully selected by the Monteverde Institute.
The homestay accommodations include breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. At
the end of the 3rd week, students will have a long weekend to travel
independently within Costa Rica or they may remain with their homestay
families in Monteverde.

Program Costs

The program cost is $4,665.00 based upon at least 10 students, the minimum
number required by USF to conduct a program overseas. Airfare is additional.
The USF Study Abroad Office will register students for courses to be taken
as part of the Globalization and Community Health Summer Field School in
Costa Rica (Payable to the USF Cashier's Office). USF Tuition of
approximately $967.00 and $300.00 USF Study Abroad Administrative fee is due
before the program.  The University of South Florida's Globalization
Research Center and Office of Research may have fellowship funding for
Monteverde Field School participants who meet eligibility requirements.

Romero-Daza,

About the USF Program Directors
Nancy Romero-Daza, PhD, is the USF Instructor of Record and Co-Director for
the USF Monteverde Globalization and Community Health Summer Field School.
She is a medical anthropologist with research experience in the areas of
HIV/AIDS, health of minority populations, women's health issues, drug abuse,
and cultural competence in the provision of health and social services.

David Himmelgreen, PhD, is Co-Director for the USF Monteverde Globalization
and Community Health Summer Field School. He is a biological anthropologist
with research experience in the areas of nutritrion, health of minority
populations, HIV/AIDS and substance abuse, and health program evaluation.
