Community Health Assessment Summer Program, Cayey, Puerto Rico
Sponsors: University of South Florida and University of Puerto Rico at Cayey

The University of Puerto Rico at Cayey (UPRC), the program site, is located
in the highlands of southeast Puerto Rico, an area of mountainous slopes.
UPRC offers academic programs at the BA and BSc levels with emphasis on
interdisciplinary education, undergraduate research and community service.
The Institute of Interdisciplinary Research at UPRC, in partnership with the
University of South Florida and the University of Puerto Rico Graduate
School of Public Health, offers this intensive summer field school to create
undergraduate research experiences and sponsor interdisciplinary health
related research programs. Currently, the Institute's health-related
research projects include topics on race, phytochemistry, HIV/AIDS and
material sciences. The Summer Field School faculty specializes in
Epidemiology, Nutrition, Community Psychology and Anthropology. Invited
speakers in History, Arts, Communication, Phytochemistry and Public Health
complement the program. The program offers hands-on, applied research
experiences that integrate qualitative and quantitative methodologies for
the assessment of community health. It is open to general sciences, social
sciences, public health, anthropology or biology majors (to name a few).
Participants learn skills, methods and processes in applied research and
their relevance to community health promotion and prevention.
