The AAA website announces that the meetings will be in Atlanta Dec 15-19.
Is this now definite as far as anyone knows?  Also, the site also
specifies that if one cannot attend a session to let the AAA know but that
no registration fees will be returned.  Is anyone still planning to go to
San Francisco for whatever reasons?  I have still not cancelled my
reservations, just in case.

Thanks,
Sue

Subject: Re: UNITE HERE Statement

<font face="arial,helvetica"><font ptsize="10" family="SANSSERIF"
 face="Arial" lang="0" size="2">Dear All,

epd (paul durrenberger) has confirmed Robert Obriens statements.&nbsp; I
also can confirm that my many conversations with UNITE Here organizers
last week and this week support what robert says regarding the union's
expressed gratitude to all our Sections and those individuals&nbsp; who made
our position known to the AAA leadership and the EBs decision last week
to move out of the SF Hilton.&nbsp; AND once it was known last week that the
AAA EB was considering the Atlanta Hilton swap, UNITE was as consistant
that this was disappointing news and, in their evaluation, unnecessary
given the San Jose option.

I was also informed several days ago of the possibility that an
atrition clause had been adopted in the Atlanta contract.&nbsp; Because this
information was unconfirmed at the time told me I chose not to release
this information at that time - as has been my practice throughout
these last ten days.&nbsp; Kwatra of UNITE did say that if true, these
actions would be considered " a slap in the face" to the union.

I also spoke to Rob several times on the phone over this period and
found his representations of UNITE to be accurate - that is, to be
consistant with what Neal and I had discussed.&nbsp;

For my part, I do not believe there was any "cloak and dagger routine."
Several AAA members contacted me to ask where/from whom I was receiving
my information regarding UNITE's positions to which I was happy to
respond in detail including providing them with the UNITE organizers
names, and contact information. Mr. Kwatra and Albert Lowe (UNITE HERE&nbsp;
Local 11- Los ANgeles) were very receptive to my giving out their
information and welcomed any other AAA member inclined to call them.&nbsp;
In response to Dan Segal's query to me yesterday, I also suggested that
he call Neal Kwartra directly to confirm for himself what UNITE's
position has been and is now.

Hope this clarify's this matter and that we can all move quickly now to
make alternative plans.&nbsp; Paule Cruz Takash, ALLA President

 Subject: Going to Atlanta? Stay in a Union-Friendly
 Hotel

You can go to the AAA and still pressure the Hilton
Corporation. The Atlanta Hilton is a corporate-run hotel,
which means they see all of the profit from it, unlike the
franchise in San Francisco where they receive only a small
fraction. It's also non-union.

Don't stay in the Atlanta Hilton. Don't buy a newspaper, a
donut, a cup of coffee, a newspaper, or a postcard at the
Hilton.

While your at it, make sure your hotel stay supports workers
with good contracts.

UNITE HERE has an online guide to hotels to which they have
given approval.

Dear Bill Beeman,
Thanks for calculating the per capita cost of the potential $1.2
million cancellation fee.  I've polled SCA Board members, and so far
everyone who has responded has offered to make a $150 contributoin
plus another $150 to cover the per capita amount of a graduate
student or underemployed anthropologist.
