2005-2006 EXEAS POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS
<p>The Expanding East Asian Studies (ExEAS) program at Columbia
University invites applications for postdoctoral fellowships for the
2005-2006 academic year. Two or three fellowships will be offered. Each
fellowship will cover a 10- or 12-month period beginning July 1, 2005
or September 1, 2005. The stipend for 2005-2006 is $41,000 plus
benefits. </p>
<p>ABOUT EXEAS </p>
<p>Expanding East Asian Studies (ExEAS) was launched in 2002
through a multi-year grant from the Freeman Foundation. Building on
intellectual, pedagogical, and outreach achievements in the
undergraduate study of East Asia, ExEAS seeks to provide: </p>
<ul>
  <li>Innovative courses and teaching materials that incorporate
the study of East Asia in broad thematic, transnational, and
interdisciplinary contexts </li>
  <li>Models for incorporating East Asia into general education,
disciplinary, and survey courses in the undergraduate curriculum </li>
  <li>Expanded networks for sharing curricular resources among
educators at all types of institutions and for the widest possible
student audiences </li>
</ul>
<p>The ExEAS program includes a teaching collaborative composed
of postdoctoral fellows, members of the Barnard and Columbia faculty,
and 15-20 faculty participants from two- and four-year undergraduate
institutions in the Northeastern United States. </p>
<p>REQUIREMENTS </p>
<p>ExEAS Fellows will devote half of their time to ExEAS
programming and half to their own research and writing. Each Fellow is
required to be in residence in the New York City area, develop and
teach one undergraduate course at Columbia (either in Fall 2005 or
Spring 2006), and participate in all activities of the ExEAS teaching
collaborative. </p>
<p>ELIGIBILITY </p>
<p>Candidates from all East Asian disciplines and areas are
welcome to apply. Recipients of the award must have completed all Ph.D.
degree requirements (completed and filed the dissertation) between July
2002 and July 2005. Applications from individuals who hold or have held
regular faculty positions will not be considered. </p>
<p>APPLICATION PROCESS </p>
<p>Applicants should submit one original and one photocopy* of
the following materials: </p>
<ul>
  <li>Application Cover Sheet </li>
  <li>Curriculum vitae </li>
  <li>Proposal for two undergraduate courses. This proposal must
not exceed 1,000 words total for both courses (approx. 2 - 3 pages).
The courses, to be offered without prerequisite, are to emphasize
cross-border, transregional, and interdisciplinary approaches. The
actual courses to be introduced will be designed collaboratively, so
this proposal is meant to convey a sense of your teaching interests
beyond the special field of your research. Courses taught by past ExEAS
fellows have included Gender in Contemporary East Asia, The Short Story
in East Asia and the Asian Diasporas, East Asian Capitalisms and <font
 color="#990000">Globalization</font>, and Japan and the World. </li>
  <li>2-3 page research proposal (not to exceed 1,000 words). </li>
  <li>3 letters of reference (signed and sealed). Letters of
reference may be those included in your placement dossier and may be
enclosed with the application (if signed and sealed). Letters may also
be sent directly by the referee. </li>
  <li>Only one copy of each letter of reference is required. </li>
</ul>
<p>All application materials (including letters of reference)
should be postmarked on or before <b>January 31, 2005.</b> Faxed or
e-mailed applications will not be accepted. Candidates may be invited
for a phone interview. All evaluations of applications are
confidential. </p>
