I'm hoping I can join in a panel or form a new one with other SUNTA members for the SfAA in Santa Fe meetings. I think my proposed paper (abstract below) would have good intersections with the disciplines of medical anthropology and applied anthropology as well as being an urban project. I would be very interested in forming a panel with other scholars interested in aging or applied urban ethnographic work or urban pedagogues. Please get in touch with me ASAP if you have a paper that would fit under these broad themes.<BR>

Feminist Pedagogy and Applied Research on Aging in Queens, NYC<BR>
<BR>
This paper discusses the need for "hands-on" learning experiences for students on projects that serve the communities hosting academic institutions. It explores a hands-on feminist pedagogy through developing applied projects with students in local senior centers. I discuss both the difficulties of coordinating this research and the positive effects on students, the local and campus communities, the university-community relationship, and the development of the professor scholar. Community-based student research should be part of both coursework and extracurricular mentored programs, and should be designed to emphasize the development of mutually beneficial relationships with community members and the empowerment of research subjects.<BR>

The Society for Applied Anthropology has graciously invited SUNTA<BR>
members to offer panels at the meeting in Sant Fe April 6-10. From the<BR>
preliminary results of the survey, those members who are willing to meet<BR>
in Spring (roughly half) prefer meeting in Santa Fe instead of Merida in<BR>
a ratio of 6 to 4. SfAA's deadline for submission of panels is November<BR>
7 and there are no exceptions. This is an invitation for any member of<BR>
SUNTA or any panel organizer who originally intended to present during<BR>
the AAA meetings in SF and cannot do so in Atlanta to present at SfAA<BR>
instead. There is no time for review by SUNTA. SfAA prefers to have the<BR>
submissions via the SfAA web site (rather than as a package). <BR>
The SfAA web site (http://www.sfaa.net/) allows an individual to<BR>
complete and forward the session abstract (including the identification<BR>
of up to 8 papers/authors). <BR>
Individual paper abstracts can then be submitted independently via the<BR>
web page. There is a space in the paper abstract form for the author to<BR>
<BR>
identify the session and session organizer (and thus, link up).<BR>
When you sumbit an abstract, you must also register for the conference.<BR>
These registration fees can be returned up to December 31, 2004 if you<BR>
change your mind. <BR>
Please let me know if you decide to move your panel to Santa Fe.<BR>
