Dr. Thomas B. Greenslade, Jr., physics professor emeritus Kenyon College, will deliver the Westminster College Woods Memorial Lecture Tuesday, March 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Lecture Hall located in the Hoyt Science Resources Center.

Dr. Greenslade will speak on the "History of Photography" starting with a discussion of the first photographic process, the Daguerreotype, following by discussions of later developments. Examples of photographs using the early techniques will be on display before and after the talk. He will also have a presentation on Westminster Physics Department Historical Equipment in Hoyt 116 at 4:30 pm on March 28.

Dr. Thomas B. Greenslade, Jr. graduated from Amherst College in 1959, received his doctorate in physics from Rutgers in 1965 and taught at Kenyon College beginning in 1964. He retired for the first time in May of 2002, was awarded a D. Sc. from Kenyon, and then went back to teaching electronics in the spring for the next three years. After forty one years he is now retired.

The author of over 200 articles, Tom Greenslade writes on topics in the history of physics, as well as lecture demonstrations and laboratory experiments developed at Kenyon. He is the past chair of the Committee on the History and Philosophy of Physics of the American Association of Physics Teachers, and has served three terms on the editorial board of The Physics Teacher.

Dr. Greenslade has a website on Historical Physics Apparatus that went on line in 2000 and currently has images of about 1850 pieces of apparatus, including some from Westminster College. In 2005 he added a museum room to his house which holds some of the 400+ pieces of early apparatus donated to him by individuals, schools and colleges.

The Woods Memorial Lecture honors Dr. Robert M. Woods, professor of physics at Westminster College from 1947-1972. It is made possible by a gift from the Woods' family that has been supplemented over the years by gifts from friends and alumni.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Dr. Lightner at (724) 946-7204 or e-mail lightner at westminter.edu.
