Dear Susan, I was wondering if you could do me the favor of forwarding this information to the Ohio AAPT list. (I've recently switched my e-mail around and so although I get the messages, I can't send to the listserv yet - I'm working on it!) Thanks so much!! I am attaching a flyer and the applications, as well. Thanks, Kathy Through the Improving Teacher Quality Program of the Ohio Board of Regents, a partnership between Ohio State, Olentangy Local Schools, and Columbus Public Schools is offering Modeling Workshops for the 4th consecutive summer. One workshop will be in physics/physical science and the other will be in chemistry. Participants receive 6 graduate credits from Ohio State Free lunch each workshop day Curricular materials consistent with the Modeling approach Several hundred dollars of classroom materials Additionally, we have funds available this year to provide housing to some participants from outside the central Ohio area. The workshops, led by local expert teachers in this methodology, run from June 12-29 and are held at Olentangy High School. Contact Kathy Harper (harper.217@osu.edu, 614-292-1525) with any questions. --- You are currently subscribed to osaapt as: FR199101@YSUB.YSU.EDU To unsubscribe send a blank email to leave-osaapt-822371E@lists.aapt.org ----- End forwarded message ----- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Recently, Arbor Scientific was invited to participate at the Focus/DMAPT Saturday Physics meeting at the University of Michigan. The theme of the session was concerning optics and the U of M Focus group had some of their best and brightest sharing demo ideas with high school physics teachers from the surrounding area. >

Prof. Roy Clarke of the University of Michigan Physics Department was discussing polarization and shared this cool demo of Rayleigh Light Scattering. >We reproduced the demo here at our office with great results and we wanted to share this with our CoolStuff ohysics subscribers. >

Bright white light source (ours is a halogen lamp like those used in track lighting)
Tall glass cylinder (ours is a 30cm tall flower vase)
Linear polarizing film
Cardboard
Corn syrup to fill cylinder

Fill the cylinder with corn syrup, pouring slowly to reduce bubbles. (Pouring well in advance will allow bubbles to escape.) Cut a hole in the cardboard, the same size as the top of the cylinder.  Place polarizing film over the top of cylinder. Then place cardboard on top of cylinder, to shield extra light. Shine light directly down into cylinder. Turn out the room lights and view from 6 to 8 feet away!

This is a great demo to show students when discussing polarized light. For an explanation on Rayleigh's theory of Light Scattering try these links: http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayleigh_scattering > Journal of Chemical Education www.che m.ufl.edu/~kschanze/outreach/d5.pdf > >

About the photo: >The image above was taken with a digital camera in a darkened room. The room lights were on while setting the exposure time and focus on the vase. On a digital camera this is done by pressing the shutter button half way down to focus. While holding the button in the focused position, the lights are then turned off and the light above the vase is turned on as the only light source. Then the shutter button is depressed completely to get the photo. This takes a little practice and helper coordination, but can be accomplished by a couple handy students. >

Is anyone using the CPO science texts and equipment? If so do you like it? Is it helping with student achievement? Is it worth geting the extra sets of equipment? We are starting to look for new texts and our new teacher was going to work for the company that sells the CPO text, so all we keep hearing is really a sales pitch. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with it? Is there another text anyone is using that they really like for physical science and physics? 2. I am on the technology committee at my school. We have been trying to come up with a staff computer acceptable use policy for our school district. We have a student one, but we need to design one that would set regulations for our the staff. Does anyone have a staff APU in their district that they can share? (and... Do you have an override account to bypass the internet filtering system? If so what is your policy?) Thanks, Marianne (Ragan) Donley
