Hello all those in YAPA land,

As time marches on, it is time to discuss our March YAPA meeting... next Tuesday March 3 at YSU 7:00-?? room 2026 Ward Beecher Hall. To jive with those at YSU getting geared up for IYA (International Year of Astronomy) let's focus our discussions on the astronomy and/or the electromagnetic spectrum. Bring some ideas to enlighten us.

Roy and Mike

In case you missed February's meeting,

Mike showed us how to survive the financial crunch by recharging batteries. Pointed out that his kids run thorugh them less often and as they age some, its OK that they can't get 6 hours out of one change of batteries. Mike also used the encoder from an old floppy drive motor as a magnetometer. Using this device, he could show the shielding effects of mumetals and detect magnetic fields in shale and some other rocks. He finished by rotating the plane of polarization of a laser beam using mirrors and related the demonstration to similar rotation in molecules.

Roy share the kinesthetic approach to parallel and series circuits using a hand generator and the holiday light board created during a YAPA sharing session. (Dick pointed out that we still have several blanks if anyone wants to build the boards at another meeting.) Roy also showed the effect of capacitors in series and parallel with a bulb again powered by a hand generator.

Dick shared physics books from the 1890's to 1920's. Its fascinating to see that the foundation has remained constant as well as recognizing areas of growth.
