Hi gang,

A quick note to remind you that this month's meeting is at YSU on Tuesday the 11th. Bring along ideas on how to keep students' interest as the term (and for many their high school years) comes to an end. As usual, the meeting will be in room 2026 Ward Beecher, starting at about 7:00 P.M.

What you missed at the April meeting:

Our hostess, Stacey Sutera provided donuts and cookies as well as the facilities for our meeting.

Jim Andrews started out by sharing with us pairs of glasses used in the new 3D movies like Avatar and Up. These are not colored. Nor are they simple linear polarizers set at opposite 45 degree slants to each other... They are actually a combination of 1/4 wave plate and linear polarizer with the phase shift for each eye rotated in opposite directions.

Gregg Sturrus shared his experience at trying to dispel the misconception that amount of plane mirror needed to see oneself varies with distance. This led to a fairly robust discussion on the topic.

Roy McCullough shared the ocean desk toy that can be used to investigate index of refraction of the two fluids and the use of silvered ornament halves to study reflection from curved mirrors.

Mike Crescimanno shared commercial and homemade versions of an interferometer and its use to measure the index of refraction of air.
