Youare Invited To The SpringMeeting of The Ohio Section of AAPTMarch 4,2017At Tri CMetro Campus, Advanced Technology Training CenterCorner of Woodland Ave and E 30thSt. Cleveland OH 441158am – 3pm                                                                                                                                                                     Ourfeatured speaker is Dr. Eugenia Etkina of Rutgers University. She will present:Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE):                                                                                                                                                                            Makingyour students collaborative participants in the practice of physics
“NextGeneration Science Standards are a response to the new needs of the world. Theyput student engagement in authentic scientific practices on equal footing withunderstanding the concepts and applying mathematical relations. In this talk Iwill describe a learning system for physics courses that naturally and seamlessly engages students inthe science practices while they are learning the “content” of physics. Infact, in this system there is no distinction between the content and the processas there is none in real physics. Students learn physics by systematicallyengaging them in the processes that mirror the practice of physics. It is basedon the findings of brain research and physics educations research and issupported by a set of comprehensive curriculum materials and numerous studiesof student learning. In my talk I will describe the systemand provide specific examples and suggestions for implementation.”
And also featured is Dr.David P. Maloney of Indiana University – Purdue University (Fort Wayne, Indianaauthor of the popular Ranking Tasks bookseries and the Tipers book series. Hewill present a Workshop: Researched Based Problem Solving in PhysicsHismain research interests concern the students’ commonsense ideas about physics, how those ideas interact with physics instruction and the study of problemsolving in Physics.
