Chemistry Teachers,<BR>At Lakeview High School the day before our holiday break is yearbook group <BR>picture day. Impossible to have any kind of lesson that day. So I have my <BR>students write down words associated with the holidays using only symbols from <BR>the periodic table. Ex. SNOW, sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, tungsten (there are <BR>other possible element-spellings for this word). I make them put the symbol in <BR>its "box" with its atomic number and element name. I allow them to work in <BR>small groups. A few simple rules are no creative spellings and no non-element <BR>letters and only one spelling for a word (can't spell snow three different <BR>ways). I make it worth 20pts and hint that the top group will receive extra <BR>points. My students have always been actively engaged in this activity. They <BR>work quietly so as not to let another group steal their word. There is little <BR>preparation, the grading is easy, and I am generous in the spirit of the <BR>holiday season.
