Dear Senators,

This is a reminder of the special Senate meeting to be held this Wednesday, February 19th, at 4:00 PM in the DeBartolo Hall auditorium. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss matters brought forth regarding, at a minimum, the following topics:

  * Adjustments to the Student Misconduct Policy
  * Reactions to Athletics proposal related to misconduct
  * Consideration of registering such findings on the Official Transcript

Mr. Eddie Howard, Vice President of Student Affairs, will be making the main presentation and will bring materials for you to review. He will be seeking input regarding these proposed changes/actions.

As Senate Chair, I try to remain neutral in handling all relevant Senate business and I generally refrain from openly voicing my opinion so as not to unduly influence others. However, I have given this impending discussion much thought and feel it is necessary to emphasize the importance of this meeting. From my personal view, I am not entirely comfortable with what has been communicated to me regarding these proposed changes/actions and the university’s reactions to the events that prompted them. I believe this is a significant discussion in which the entire YSU community, faculty, staff, and students, should actively participate. The proposed actions/changes may have profound impacts not only on our students and their educational/social experiences at YSU, but also faculty and staff may be affected. Therefore, I most strongly encourage you and your non-senator colleagues to attend this meeting so that your input will be taken into consideration prior to any action by the YSU administration.

Chet Cooper, Chair
Academic Senate
