Ygt. Baptist Pastors to honor legacy of Slain Civil Rights Leader
This year represents the 40th anniversary of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King's assassination by James Earl Ray on the balcony of the Lorainne
Motel in Memphis Tennessee.
Youngstown- The Baptist Pastors Council of Youngstown and Vicinity will
commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King on Friday,
April 4th in the Rotunda of the Mahoning County Courthouse, 120 Market
Street. The public observance, which begin at noon, will feature music
and reflections.
Rev. J. Dwayne Heard, Council President noted, As time continues to
move forward, we run the risk that succeeding generations will lose the
appreciation of a social justice movement that engaged people of all
ages, races, and faiths. It is important to note that the ideas and the
ideals of the cause did not die. Yet, it remains vital and relevant for
us to recall the personal sacrifice of icons, such as Dr. King who
enhanced the quality of life for all Americans.
The Baptist Pastors Council, founded in 1927, is comprised of area
pastors and ministers whose mission is to enhance the quality of life
for the residents of the Mahoning Valley. The Council, in partnership
with the Youngstown State University Foundation, awards annually the
Rev. Martin Luther & Coretta Scott King Scholarships. It has provided
advocacy and community engagement in the greater Youngstown as its core
function.
For further information about the Council, the scholarship program or
community projects, please contact Rev. Lewis Macklin at 330-788-1495,
or Rev. Heard at 330-740-1982, extension 11.
We hope you and your coworkers will be able to join us. Please feel
free to distribute this email. Peace- Rev. Lewis Macklin
