RACE AND POLITICS: THE IMPACT OF GRASSROOTS MOVEMENTS
Special Guest: Legendary Activist Staughton Lynd

Youngstown State University’s Black Faculty Staff Association (BFSA) will
sponsor its annual Race and Politics Series on January 19, 2012 in DeBartolo Auditorium from 6:00-8:00 p.m. This year BFSA will host a three-part series panel discussion on the current social, economic and political impact of grassroots movements. The first panel discussion will focus on current key factors surrounding the birth of
contemporary grassroots movements.

Special guest panelist: civil rights and peace activist, author, and historian Staughton Lynd. During the 1980s, Lynd worked with Youngstown steelworkers to keep the mills open and chronicled the fight in a book titled The Fight Against Shutdowns - the Youngstown Steel Mill Closings. In the 50’s and 60’s Lynd was a conscientious objector, and worked with organizations such as the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee
(SNCC) and the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). He is also the author and editor of more than twenty publications on issues ranging from the labor movement to the civil rights of prisoners.

Additional guest panelists: Author Richard Trusick of Reaganomics: The Path to Fascism and Supply-Side Economics and Globalization: The End of Democracy and Capitalism-The Corridor to 9-11. Gary Davenport, community student activist from Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative and Wick Park Neighborhood organizer, and Rev. Rosalyne Mitchell-Martin, vice president of Gamaliel Foundation's National Clergy Caucus, which is a Chicago-based grassroots network of non-partisan, faith-based
organizations in the United States, South Africa and the United Kingdom, will also serve as panelists.
