49th IFHP World Congress: Urban Futures, Continuities and Discontinuities, the
history inside the future

2-5 October 2005. Rome, Italy
Deadline for abstracts: 15 February 2005

Place: Rome is a city of 3,000,000 inhabitants, with a surface area of 129,000
hectares. It is the Capital of Italy, the Papal Seat, and the largest Italian
municipality. The open area of Rome, also the largest agricultural municipality

in Italy, accounts for two-thirds of the municipal territory. The historical
centre contains 1000 ha’s of monumental and historical examples of inestimable
value. The new Urban Master Plan, adopted in 2003, is increasing this protected

area to 7000 hectares spread across the entire urban landscape and including
various buildings realised during the 20th century. Rome is the perfect back
drop for an event on continuities and discontinuities in urban development.

Theme: URBAN FUTURES: CONTINUITIES AND DISCONTINUITIES Talking about the
futures
of cities implies comparing the existing dynamics – that appear to be leading
towards the planetary standardisation of the urban environment – with the
historical and geographical characteristics that make individual cities
different from all the others. Set against the backdrop of the global process
of
urbanisation, and its various geographical declinations, the aim is to identify

those elements of continuity within cities that are resistant to
standardisation, those which, by contrast, are the causes of ruptures with
their
respective histories, and the “cultures of the city” that are emerging as a
result of the simultaneous evolution of societies and their respective
habitats.
This confrontation with the continuities and discontinuities of history will
therefore allow for an investigation of the degree to which the genetic roots
of
cities and the materials which history has deposited may determine and
influence
behaviour, policies, strategies and projects.
