Istanbul Technical University-Faculty of Architecture

ISTANBUL FRAGMENTED 2005 invites abstract and poster
proposals.

The purpose of ISTANBUL FRAGMENTED '05 is to provide an experimental
discussion platform on urban representation for experts in the cultural
fields to compare a series of speculative recent approaches by the
young researchers from across the humanities and social sciences.

ISTANBUL FRAGMENTED '05 will be an opportunity to enhance
interdisciplinary ties between those in the academic world exploring
ideas of city, and those practitioners and organizations focused on
urban works.

The theme of the city fragmented places emphasis on urban design models
and ideals, contrasting with the diversity of cities and urban
situations. In this context, ISTANBUL FRAGMENTED '05 is a platform in
conceiving the city as a place for the intersection of historical and
cultural identities, and in representing the city through the media of
photography in particular as well as literature, art, film and performance.

ISTANBUL FRAGMENTED '05 coincides with the 9th International Istanbul
Biennale between 16 September- 30 October 2005, co-curated by Charles
Esche and Vasif Kortun. The title of the Biennale is "Istanbul"
refferring both to the real urban location and the imaginative charge
that this city represents for the world.

Combining a symposium in the format of round table discussions and a
series of workshops in the field of urban-architecture-landscape-art,
the organizers have sought to develop a programme that will look beyond
the familiar images of cities and focus rather on the past-today-future
of the city with a challenging approach.

The Conference will address the following sub-themes:
