A friend and colleague in Cuba asked me to circulate the following call
for papers for the conference below. Queries should be made directly to

National Union of Architects and Engineers -UNAICC-*

* Calls for the II Conference on Urban and Building Heritage Preservation.*

The event will take place in Havana City, capital of Cuba from April 19
to 21, 2005 in Old Havana, the largest and most important Historical
Center of the island, designated World Heritage by UNESCO in 1982.

The province of Sancti Spiritus will be co-host to the main event. This
province's capital is a National Monument and its territory includes the
UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trinidad and the Valley of the /Ingenios/.

*Objectives:*

Help develop the conceptual debate in relation to architecture and
urbanism's historical values among architects, urban planners and other
associated professionals using this advanced thinking as a fundamental
tool to stimulate the discussion of relevant agendas about the present,
such as sustainable development, globalization and design in the
contemporary world and their impacts on the development of the genuine
expression of the Cuban architecture.

*Topics:*

The event is organized in different commissions according to the
following aspects:

     * Colonial Architecture. Theory and Research. Presentation of
Projects and Completed works. Adaptive reuse.
     * 20th Century Architecture. Theory and Research. Projects and
Completed works. Adaptive reuse.
     * Traditional or Vernacular Architecture. Theory and Research.
Projects and Completed Works. Adaptive reuse.
     *New Innovations in areas designated for cultural and historical
preservation. Theory and research. Contemporary design practice.
Quality, Contextual integration and contrasts.
     * Contemporary use of technology and construction materials in
cultural and historical heritage areas.
     * Urban rehabilitation in Heritage designated areas. The
preservation of the traditional image. The Urban Plan.
     * The training of architects and other related professionals on
preservation, recreation and creation in historical contexts.

*Deadlines for papers and approvals:*

The receipt of papers will run until January 30, 2005 (this date has
been extended until February 15, 2005).

Papers must be delivered at UNAICC Headquarters, in digital format or
printed.

The list of accepted papers will be issued no later than February 28, 2005.

During the registration, all the participants must deliver a printed
copy of the work and its digital version in a 3-1/2   diskette or CD-ROM.

*Participation forms:*

The organizers are responsible for the final selection of works
according to the Conference schedule. The final proceedings will
include the publication of all accepted papers.

The organizers may suggest that some of the papers be presented as
posters in order to accept a larger amount of works. Participants
interested in presenting posters must inform the organizers about their
choice. Posters must not exceed the dimensions of 0.60m x 0.90m.

All participants must submit their work in digital version plus one
printed copy.

*Papers' submission and selection criteria*.

Each paper will include the following information: author
identification, title, topic, and summary up to 350 words.

For final acceptance papers must have a maximum of 10 pages including
graphic information, in Word, simple spacing, Arial 10, images in jpg.

Foreign participants may deliver the printed and digital copies at the
accreditation desk the first day of the conference.

Papers may be written in English or Spanish. The presentations must not
take longer than 15 minutes.

The criteria for the final selection of papers will consider academic
accuracy, correlation with the objectives, relevant contributions to
the discussion topics. and novelty of scope and contents.

*REGISTRATION FEES*

Participants   with papers 120 CUC, without papers 160 CUC

Students 80 CUC

Accompanying guests. 100 CUC

The academic conferences will take place in plenary sessions, and
individual presentations are going to be in commissions according to
the event topics. The program includes visits to The Old Havana.
Optional trips to the Historical Centers of Sancti Spiritus and
Trinidad have been considered for additional payment.
