Workshop on Mobile City Singapore

Spanning Singapore's history as a colonial entrepot to its present as a 
'cosmopolising' global city, 'Singapore stories' are frequently tales of 
departure and arrival. This workshop will explore various dimensions of 
migration and this global city-state from multidisciplinary perspectives. It 
will examine the historical and contemporary experiences of immigrants and 
sojourners in Singapore and overseas Singaporeans as well as the 
redefinitions of city and state spaces that multiple crossings of national 
boundaries have entailed. We welcome contributions that address various 
forms of migrations on one or more of the following major themes:

Histories of migration and migration research in Singapore
Where have migration researchers been and where are they going? How have 
migration policies and trends changed over time? What migrant histories have 
yet to be written?
Cultural politics in place
Who leaves and who stays? What are the relative mobilities of migrant 
groups? What reterritorializations, deterritorializations, belongings and 
exclusions have attended various flows?
Overseas Singaporeans and citizenry
How do out-migrants negotiate 'home' and 'away'? What are their experiences 
of citizenship?
Transnational flows and national imaginations
What are the economic, political and socio-cultural consequences of 
migration for the nation? How have these been actively negotiated?

Possible topics include (but are not limited to):
Cosmopolitanism and nationhood
Migration and social cohesion
Social justice and civil society
The role of migration agencies
Sex, race, gender and mobility
Postcoloniality and the politics of migrant space
Rememberings, forgettings and home
Geopolitics and global city Singapore
Diasporic spaces
Low- versus high-skilled immigrants
Singapore as an arts and education hub
Sojourns and homecomings
Migration and the regionalization drive
Mobile city/ global city
Urban planning and migration policy

Please submit expressions of interest (including a tentative title or topic) 
by June 30 and 250 word abstracts by August 31 2006 to Dr. Leong Chan-Hoong 
(arilch at nus.edu.sg). Please send your abstract with the proposal form which 
can be downloaded from the workshop webpage.

To facilitate publication of an edited volume based on the papers presented 
at the workshop, the deadline for final papers is January 31, 2007.
