April 28-29, 2006

A conference co-sponsored by the Urban Studies Program of Fordham
University, La Maison Française of NYU and the Institute of French
Studies of NYU

Some of the most ambitious redevelopment plans in recent memory, from
the makeover of Les Halles to the reconstruction of the World Trade
Center site, are transforming Paris and New York. This conference will
analyze the most current urban design initiatives as innovative
representations of urban space and landscape. The significance of these
projects and the astonishing public interest in them provide an
unprecedented opportunity for reflection. They bring into focus all the
strengths and weaknesses of global capital cities and the unique
qualities of urban life in Paris and New York. They challenge us to
enhance our understanding of these two extraordinary places and their
possibilities for the future.
