Call to Faculty for Projects

Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship

The Social Science Research Council is organizing a new Dissertation
Proposal Development Fellowship(http://www.ssrc.org/programs/dpdf/), funded
by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The program is actively recruiting
research directors to lead small groups of graduate fellows in two workshops
that frame summer predissertation research in a series of research fields.
Research fields are generally subdisciplinary and interdisciplinary domains
with common intellectual questions and research styles. These may be
emerging disciplines, be constituted around geographic regions not
traditionally mapped by current funding structures, or develop from novel
ways of encouraging comparative and interdisciplinary work, including a
focus on specific kinds of sources. Research fields can be topical in focus,
transnational in scope, or comparative. There will be two research directors
per group; five groups will be funded in 2007. Research directors must be
tenured, experienced supervisors of thesis research. Each director will
receive a $7,500 stipend; fellows will receive up to $5,000 in research
support. Joint proposals from two faculty (due Nov. 15, 2006) consist of
letters of interest - up to 5 single-spaced pages - including a short
bibliography and describing the relevance of the research field, the kind of
graduate students who might be recruited, and proposed activities for each
of the two workshops, plus authors' CVs. For more information, contact SSRC
staff at dpdf at ssrc.org.
