Summary:
In the last 10 years, Brazil and other Latin American companies have been
developing ecotourism and nature tourism projects as forms of generating
income, controlling the use of natural resources, and preserving traditional
values and technologies. Many of these initiatives are being developed in
collaboration with environmental conservation projects inside and outside
conservation units (i.e. national parks, biological reserves), in
collaboration with indigenous populations, groups reminiscent of African
descent, and traditional populations. Even more teleological positions in
respect to preservation of traditional culture and nature are being
confronted by contemporary arguments based on the seduction of benefits that
can be drawn from economic growth.
This Discussion Panel has the objective of reflecting on ecotourism and
nature tourism (a) in territorially-defined areas (i.e. Indigenous reserve,
areas reminiscent of African descent and conservation units); (b) in
possible combinations with environmental conservation projects, traditional
knowledge and economic uses; and (c) interconnections of interests of
different actors and institutions (i.e. communities, NGOs, municipalities,
government agencies, universities, international organisms, etc.)

RULES FOR PARTICIPATING SET BY THE ABANNE COORDINATION:
