Technical University Darmstadt

Under the state government LOEWE programme for the promotion of scientific
and economic excellence, the Hesse Ministry of Science and Art is supporting
a research area on "The Intrinsic Logic of Cities" at the Technical
University Darmstadt. It is proposed to fill the following chair at the TU
Darmstadt as of 1 October 2008.

Chair (W 2) in interdisciplinary urban studies
(Reference no. 246)

The appointee will be expected to address the multi-disciplinary embedding
of the subject "city" in teaching and research. Cities are investigated by a
wide range of disciplines and disciplinary cultures. With the establishment
of a chair in interdisciplinary urban studies, the diversity of perspectives
and their conveyance become themselves subjects of investigation. The
appointee is expected to have had experience in interdisciplinary urban
research and to develop concepts for interlinking disciplinary cultures.
Teaching activities (major and minor studies, interdisciplinary courses)
should focus equally on imparting the fundamentals of the humanities and
social sciences to students of architecture and associated subjects and on
training young URBANgrad researchers.

Research specialisation in one of the following topic areas is desired:
- The technological and media construction of urban spaces
- Cities as repositories and media of historical identities
- The intrinsic logic of urban knowledge spaces
- Comparative urban research
- Urban development and decision-making processes.

The LOEWE research area is intent on establishing several research consortia
and is looking for a personality to collaborate on the interdisciplinary
framing of research projects and to conduct projects of his/her own on the
intrinsic logic of cities. A scholar is sought to supplement the subject
spectrum of the LOEWE research area (e.g., offering media and image
science, cultural or human geography, and heritage management/building
and art history). Application with the usually documents (curriculum vitae,
references, and publication list) are to be sent under the above reference
number to the following address: Dekan des Fachbereichs Architektur,
El-Lissitzky-Str. 1, 64287 Darmstadt.

Deadline for applications: 31 August 2008

The position is initially limited to 5 years. Sections 70 (5) and (6) of the
Hesse University Act (HHG) apply. Pay status is that of salaried employee
exempt from collectively agreed terms to be remunerated depending on
qualifications in keeping with the W-Besoldung remuneration scheme, to
be negotiated between the candidate and the university management.
Professors who already have career public service status (Beamtenverhältnis)
can retain it. The appointment requirements set forth under Section 71 of
the Hesse University Act also apply. The Technical University of Darmstadt
is seeking to increase the proportion of women among its staff and
therefore particularly encourages women to apply. Equally well qualified
disabled persons will be given preference.
