I believe that if you add the promotion of commercial agriculture, not only
in Africa but all over the world, also in the name of poverty alleviation,
you could account for most of today's urban poverty, rise of the supercity,
and related loss of cultural diversity in the rural regions of our world,
and you can add to this list the undocumented migration to "first world
countries" today.  In a way, the "illegal" migrants of today are the
grandchildren of the "Alliance for Progress" and other similar development
schemes that enriched those who sold the technology and lent third world
countries the money to buy it.

RE: the post on displacement in Africa - there is 
a large body of work associated with involuntary 
displacement from large infrastructure 
development. When you add up the numbers I 
suspect you will find that post-world war II 
infrastructure development (in the name of 
poverty alleviation!) is perhaps single largest 
contribution to urban poverty, rise of the 
supercity, and related loss of cultural diversity 
in the rural regions of our world.
