International and Development Studies, Geneva

Application deadline: 31 May 2009

About the Graduate Institute, Geneva, Switzerland:

The Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies is a world
renowned graduate school of teaching and research in these fields. It was
created in 2008 by the merger of the Graduate Institute of International
Studies, Europe's oldest institute of international studies (founded 1927),
and the Graduate Institute of Development Studies, one of Europe's first
institutes devoted to the study of development (founded 1961). The Institute
plays host to a diversified and vibrant body of students and faculty. More
than 800 Master's and PhD students from all over the world (75% of our
students are international students) are currently enrolled.

The 4th Global South Workshop (19-23 October 2009, Geneva)

Following the success of three previous workshops, we are pleased to
announce the 4th Global South Workshop. This workshop is open to outstanding
young scholars from the global south pursuing advanced graduate research in
areas bridging the fields of international studies and development studies,
broadly defined, and working in disciplines such as anthropology, history,
law, politics and political science, and economics. Scholars specializing in
conflict, post-conflict societies, migration, and governance are
particularly encouraged to apply.
The main aim of the workshop is to help build a network of young scholars
from southern countries by providing them opportunities to interact and
share experiences with fellow scholars from the south, and develop
collaborative frameworks and projects that may help advance the salience of
southern perspectives in their fields and disciplines.

Participants will be expected to present their research at the workshop.
They will also have opportunities for professional interaction with faculty
and research students at the Graduate Institute, and with international and
non-governmental organizations in Geneva. English will be the working
language.

The Workshop will be held from 19-23 October 2009 in Geneva.

Participants from outside Geneva will be provided accommodation and receive
a contribution towards living expenses. The Institute will also cover return
excursion fares for participants enrolled at southern universities.

Conditions for Application:

- Candidates will typically be nearing completion of their PhDs at a
southern university;
- Recent PhDs from southern universities working within the region, and
students from the south nearing completion of their PhDs on south-related
topics and perspectives at northern universities may also be considered.
- Women are especially encouraged to apply.

Selection will be based on the quality of research. Quality being equal,
selection may be guided by an interest in promoting thematic coherence at
the workshop.

Interested candidates satisfying the above criteria may e-mail the following
application package:
- a letter of self-introduction and motivation
- a detailed CV with contact details of two referees
- a 2000-word summary of the PhD project that includes a draft chapter
outline

Send your complete application package via email to
globalsouth at graduateinstitute.ch
Deadline for application: 31 May 2009.
