Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences

The Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences (FMG) is the largest 
educational and research institution in the social sciences in the 
Netherlands. The Faculty serves 7,500 students in numerous Bachelor's and 
Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, 
Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and 
International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic 
staff is employed in education as well as research. There are over 1,100 
employees at the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the 
centre of Amsterdam.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is one of the Departments in 
the FMG. Research and education are carried out by special institutes. The 
College of Social Sciences (CSS) and the Graduate School for the Social 
Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching 
programmes in the social sciences. Cultural anthropology is one of the 
disciplines in need of further strengthening.

An interdisciplinary research institute that focuses on issues related to 
migration and integration from an international and comparative perspective, 
the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) is one of the research 
institutes. IMES wishes to strengthen its profile in immigrant ethnic 
minority youth & identity studies.

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the Institute for Migration 
and Ethnic studies currently have an opening for an

Assistant Professor of Anthropology
38 hours per week, or 1.0 fte (full-time)

The new assistant professor is expected to spend 60 percent of his or her 
time on teaching and 40 percent on research.

Duties
strengthening the broad profile of anthropology in Amsterdam
provide general, specialist and methodological education in the Bachelor's 
and Master's programmes of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and 
(assist in) supervising graduate students
developing, carrying out and supervising social science research at a high 
academic level. This research will take place at the Institute for Migration 
and Ethnic Studies and must fit its current research programme, notably its 
research line on life courses & generational change in a European context
acquiring, or helping to acquire, external funding for research
actively contributing to the development of the discipline in national and 
international contexts by publishing and participating in national and 
international research networks and educational initiatives
the ability to immediately participate in courses taught in Dutch serves as 
a recommendation


Profile
completed doctoral thesis in the field of cultural anthropology
publications in international 'peer reviewed' periodicals and/or in books 
published by internationally recognised presses
broad knowledge in the field of general social science
specialist knowledge in immigrant ethnic minority youth & identity studies 
(as described in the IMES research programme)
thorough mastery of mastery of quantitative and/or qualitative research 
methods
a proven record of good quality teaching, preferably at both bachelor and 
master level
in a fairly short term: perfect passive, and adequate active knowledge of 
Dutch
in possession of the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (or foreign 
equivalent), or willingness to acquire such

Appointment
Appointment at the Assistant Professor level will initially be for two years 
and, conditional on adequate functioning, there is the possibility of 
tenure, again conditional on adequate performance. The salary will be on 
salary scales 11/12, currently a minimum of ? 3,195 and a maximum of ? 4,970 
gross per month. The appointment will be subject to the collective agreement 
regulating employment conditions at Dutch universities. The date on which 
the appointment is to start will be determined by mutual agreement. 
Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants. The UvA offers 
a very attractive pension scheme.
