Van, 1914-15: From Cooperation to Annihilation - a Case Study from the
Armenian Genocide

Thursday, 29 November 2007, 4:00 pm (3703 W.W. Posvar Hall)

The lecture examines the relations between the Ottoman government and the
Armenian community from the start of the war in Europe in August 1914 to the
start of regional deportations in May 1915. The region around Lake Van was
the stronghold of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF). Relations
between the ARF and the government deteriorated quickly. A climate of
political repression developed, marked by increasingly violent clashes.
After winter inaction, government repression culminated in a wholesale
attack on the Armenian community, which decided to stage a self-defense. For
decades, the defense at Van and its causes stand the center of a bitter
debate. Based on research in Turkish archives, the lecture will offer a
fresh perspective on the strategies of both sides.

Dr. Hilmar Kaiser is probably the scholar with the best knowledge of
archival sources about the Armenian genocide. He has published several books
and numerous book chapters on this topic.
