Chemistry Teachers,At Lakeview High School the day before our holiday break is yearbook group picture day. Impossible to have any kind of lesson that day. So I have my students write down words associated with the holidays using only symbols from the periodic table. Ex. SNOW, sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, tungsten (there are other possible element-spellings for this word). I make them put the symbol in its "box" with its atomic number and element name. I allow them to work in small groups. A few simple rules are no creative spellings and no non-element letters and only one spelling for a word (can't spell snow three different ways). I make it worth 20pts and hint that the top group will receive extra points. My students have always been actively engaged in this activity. They work quietly so as not to let another group steal their word. There is little preparation, the grading is easy, and I am generous in the spirit of the holiday season. It works for me, I hope that you find this activity helpful. Norma
