Thunderous Drumming, acrobatic finesse, and a storyline stretching over five
centuries highlight the most recent work created by the Nego Gato Music and
Dance Ensemble with guest artist Paco Gomes. In Navio Negreiro-The Ships of
Enslavement- the rhythms of the ancestors resonate in this tale that
dramatizes the experience of those who traversed the tragedy of the Middle
Passage yet emerged victorious. The story begins in Africa, carries the
audience onto the ships of enslavement, and follows the African-Brazilians
through the inspiring events of survival against insurmountable odds. The
amazing costumes illuminate the stage as the performers dance a blend of
traditional Afro-Brazilian movements and modern dance. This performance
marks the first time that two incredible artists: Mestre Nego Gato
<http://negogato.org/about_gato.html> , and International Choreographer Paco
Gomes <http://negogato.org/NavioArtistBios.htm> have collaborated to create
a full-length concert event. The evening is propelled by the dynamic rhythms
of the drum led by Director Mestre Nego Gato. Melodies which have survived
centuries are sung as the performers mix Modern dance choreography with the
spiritual dances of the African-Brazilian religion Candomble. Highlighting
the performance are the dazzling athletic displays performed from the
unbelievable Afro-Brazilian martial art known as Capoeira. Navio is sure to
"edutain" audiences of all ages, don't miss it! To buy tickets see below!
