And more Christians, more of us working together, not just white
Christians, but whites and blacks of every faith, ecumenically working
together. - Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Speech to the National Press Club,
April 28, 2008
This presidential election has brought unprecedented attention to race
and the Christian community. Your brothers and sisters in the the
Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance in partnership with the
Baptist Pastors Council and The Center for Working-Class Studies at
YSU, sense that it is time for the Christian leaders in the Mahoning
Valley to come together in an honest conversation toward reconciliation
within the Christian community.
To that end, we seek your help in that reconciliation.
The event is entitled: The Spirit of Unity through Relationship,
Reconciliation, and Redemption: A 4 Real Dialogue on Race.
On Monday, June 9, 2008, there will be a dialogue and conversation open
to all Christian clergy and professional church leaders in the Mahoning
Valley.
The event will be hosted at the Salvation Army Center, 1501 Glenwood
Ave., Youngstown. Registration begins at 5:30 pm, and a light dinner
will be served during registration.
In the spirit of the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman
at Jacob's Well, we hope that truth and trust is developed between
Christian leaders through honest dialogue about racism and its affects
on the Christian community.
Attached is a flier with more information. Please let me know if you
will be able to participate. The event is free and open to the enitre
community.Rev. Robert Johnson is chairman of the event

Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Youngstown: The IMA of
Youngstown is one of several chapters across the country that serve to
bring together Christian leaders of all denominations and backgrounds.
The IMA serves to address social and economic issues that impact its
members' communities. Currently, the IMA is working with the Community
Mobilization Committee and the Baptist Pastors Council in establishing
a faith-based community credit union. Past and on-going projects of
the IMA include the Knowledge Works community education program and the
Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS. Rev. Lewis Macklin II serves
as president
In conjunction with Baptist Pastors Council of Youngstown: The BPC was
founded in 1927 for the purpose of “promoting fellowship, Christian
education and Christian endeavors” in Youngstown and vicinity. The BPC
gathers together area Baptist clergy who believe that “through mutual
understanding, study and exchange of ideas” people can correct and
solve problems in churches and the community. The BPC also strives to
“promote better understanding civilly, socially and spiritually.” The
Council works with Youngstown State University to annually award the
Rev. Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King Scholarship, and is a key
sponsor in the American Baptist College extension unit. Rev. J. Dwayne
Heard serves as president.
Center for Working-Class Studies at YSU: The CWCS was the first
academic program in the U.S. to focus on issues of work and class.
CWCS members have been at the forefront of "new working-class studies,"
an international movement that brings together academics, artists,
activists, students, and others who are interested in the history,
experiences, stories, and politics of the working class. The Center's
mission is to increase awareness of and respect for working-class life
and culture through education, the arts, media, and research. The
Center is co-directed by Sherry Linkon and John Russo.
