APRIL 26, 2012 @ YSU DeBARTOLO HALL AUDITORIUM, 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

Social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have become
instrumental in movements for social change. Many have accredited this
digital mobilization for stimulating dormant interest in social issues,
initiating protests, and, in some cases, causing revolutions. But how do
grassroots organizations use social media, and how effective is
cyber-activism in actually delivering social change?

The BFSA, Students for Social Justice, and the Northeast Ohio ACM are
sponsoring a panel discussion entitled "Using Social Media for Political
Protests: Helpful or Harmful?" The utility of social media will be addressed
by the panel of scholars and activists. This discussion will take place on
April 26th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the DeBartolo Hall Auditorium (Rm. 132)
on the Youngstown State University campus.

Our guest panelists include:

Dr. Alyssa Lenhoff, YSU Director of Journalism; Dr. Tom Oder, YSU Physics
Professor and Ugandan Activist; Dr. David Porter, YSU Political Science
Professor and contributor to the book "International Science and Technology
Philosophy, Theory and Policy"; and Rebecca Schueller, Social Media and the
Arab Spring Researcher, and Graduate of the University of Jordan. Other
panelists are Jenny Jacobs, YSU student and Animal and Environmentalist
Activist, and Gary Davenport, president of the Wick Park Neighborhood
Association. Both are avid users of social media.
