History
Postdoctoral Fellow: Center for African American Urban Studies and the
Economy (CAUSE). The Dept. of History, Carnegie Mellon University, seeks a
scholar in the humanities and/or social sciences doing history-related
research in African American urban studies. The fellow will pursue his/her
own research project; collaborate with the director on current Center
projects; and interact with faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate
students. The appointment is for 9 months beginning August 15, 2005. The
fellowship carries a stipend of $40,000 and $4,000 for research and

George Mason University, Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution
(ICAR) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant
Professor level, beginning in Fall 2005. ICAR is a free-standing,
multi-disciplinary unit within the university committed to the analysis of
deeply rooted, protracted social conflicts, and the exploration of processes
for their resolution (www.gmu.edu/departments/ICAR).
We seek candidates with disciplinary or interdisciplinary training in social
science, especially urban studies and sociology, conflict analysis and
resolution, public policy, anthropology and psychology. We seek those who
combine serious writing and research on conflict resolution together, in
some measure, with practice. Area/regional interests and methodology
specialization are open. The committee will begin reviewing applications

Professor/Faculty Fellow
The new Department of Social And Cultural Analysis in the Faculty of Arts
and Science at New York University invites applicants for an Assistant
Professor/Faculty Fellow. The successful candidate's primary
responsibilities will fall within the Department's interdisciplinary
Metropolitan Studies Program, which sponsors the undergraduate major for the
study of the city. The initial appointment will be for one year beginning
September 1, 2005, renewable annually for a maximum of three years, pending
administrative and budgetary approval. The search will be open-field at
this rank, but the Department especially seeks an outstanding scholar of
non-western cities, and would also prefer someone with expertise in gender
and social space, urban planning, cultural geography, the built environment,
or urban anthropology. Responsibilities include teaching three courses a
year and advising students. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to
interdisciplinary scholarship and excellence in teaching, and have completed

* University of Puget Sound, Assistant Professor of Anthropology
Full-time, tenure-line position; begins Fall Term 2005. Teach social
research (qualitative) methods, anthropological theory, and introductory
cultural anthropology with specialization in at least two of the following
areas: research methods, indigenous peoples of North, Meso or South America,
urban anthropology, and public policy issues (e.g., health, law,
environment, education). Three courses/semester. Participate in core
curriculum, continue professional development, advise students, and
participate in governance.
Expertise in at least two of the following areas: research methods,
indigenous peoples, urban anthropology, and public policy issues. Commitment
to undergraduate teaching, active scholarship and liberal arts education in
an interdisciplinary department also required. Must be able to employ an
explicitly cross-national, cross-cultural, and/or comparative perspective in
teaching and research. We especially welcome candidates whose teaching
emphasizes minority issues. Interested individuals are encouraged to submit

Assistant Professor Yale University invites applications for an Assistant
Professorship to commence July 1, 2005, as a joint appointment in the
Departments of African-American Studies and Anthropology. The Departments
have particular needs for a scholar with expertise in at least one of the
following areas: urban anthropology, the cultural politics of race, and
bio-medical or science studies. It would be advantageous if the candidates
were willing to teach courses in qualitative methodology. The successful
applicant should have an interest in furthering the departments' joint
commitment to the importance of developing comparative and
multi-disciplinary approaches to African American history and culture, and
