Dear colleagues,

My department has received Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
funding to support 2 students to pursue 2-year Master of Community and
Regional Planning at Iowa State University. The objective of this HUD
Community Development Work Study Program is to increase the number of
minority students entering the planning profession. It provides funding to
economically disadvantaged and minority graduate students who participate in
a community development work study program.

Please direct all interested students who meet the eligibility requirement
to contact me ASAP or to submit an application to the department. Thank you.

THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND REGIONAL PLANNING IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WORK STUDY PROGRAM STUDENTSHIPS

The Department of Community and Regional Planning, in the College of Design,
Iowa State University, is delighted to announce two studentships provided by
the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to support graduate
students in the 2-year Master of Community and Regional Planning program.
The
HUD Community Development Work Study Program exists to provide assistance to
economically disadvantaged and minority graduate students who participate in
a
community development work study program, and thereby to increase the number
of minority students entering the planning field.

The HUD stipend of $9,000 per year for each student will be augmented with
an
additional $6,000 per year from the Iowa State University Graduate College.
In
addition, CDWSP students will each receive a tuition reduction of 50
percent.
Please note that out-of-state (nonresident) CDWSP students will be
classified
as residents for the purposes of tuition, hence will pay only the resident
tuition fee. With resident status and the 50 percent reduction, nonresident
CDWSP students will pay only $1,427 per semester.

The MCRP is a two-year professional degree program, which prepares its
graduates for careers in community building professions. The structure of
our
graduate curriculum is aimed at linking theory to practice, developing
theoretical understanding of various substantive planning areas as well as
exposing students to the daily practice of planning at various governmental
levels and in the private sector. In line with this the CDWSP students will
have at least three separate internships with agencies working on planning
and
community development issues. To date, the Department has agreements with 13
community building agencies that have agreed to accept CDWSP interns. In
addition, outreach is a key component of our activities, and an integral
part
of our land-grant mission. Our last Planning Accreditation Board site-visit
report noted that our outreach program is one of the best in the country.

Please note that there are specific eligibility requirements for CDWSP
studentships: economically disadvantaged and minority status will be
determined on the basis of applicable guidelines established at ISU to
measure
financial need for academic scholarship or loan assistance, including, but
not
limited to, students who are Black, American Indian/Alaskan Native,
Hispanic,
or Asian/Pacific Island, and including students with disabilities. Further
details are available from the Office of Student Financial Aid, 0210
Beardshear Hall, Ames, IA 50011 (tel: 515 294 2223), or at:
http://www.financialaid.iastate.edu/strudentresources/fafsainformation.htm
Note also that applicants must be US citizens or lawful permanent residents
(i.e. recipient of an Alien Registration Recipient Card Form I-551, also
known
as a Green Card).

The studentships are timetabled to commence in Fall 2006. Early applications
are strongly encouraged. Application forms are available at:
