PhD scholarship on circumpolar concepts of the home
Deadline: October 30, 2006

Home, Hearth, and Household in the Circumpolar North Funded by ESF -
EUROCORES The Centre for Sami Studies, University of Tromsø, invites
applications for a three year PhD studentship financed by the Norwegian
Research Council under the auspices of the European Science Foundation's
BOREAS research programme. The candidate will be expected to carry out
primary research leading to a doctoral dissertation in colloboration with an
international group of scholars. The topic should be related to that of our
research programme, which will compare the vernacular architecture, the use
of space, and social dynamics of indigenous households in Sapmi (Northern
Scandinavia and Northwest Russia). The full programme is an
interdisciplinary project combining the efforts of anthropologists,
archaologists, and historical demographers. The candidate would write their
dissertation in one of these three disciplines, but would be expected to
engage with researchers in the other areas. We would also expect the
candidate to reflect on our goals of sharing methods and revitalising skills
in communities. This position also offers resources for field research and
the opportunity to travel to international seminars organised by the ESF. An
application should stress primary research in a region of Sapmi and one of
the three research trajectories.
