Sponsor: The Department of Anthropology at the University of South Florida

The Department of Anthropology at the University of South Florida announces
its sixth annual Globalization and Community Health Field School to be
conducted in Monteverde, Costa Rica from June 22nd to July 27th, 2008. The
field school is a five-week intensive program that teaches students
qualitative and quantitative methodologies used to conduct community-based
research related to health in areas undergoing rapid changes associated with
globalization. The program offers an introduction to the Costa Rican health
care system (through visits to hospitals, clinics, health posts), and
provides students with in-class instruction and field practice as they learn
methods such as systematic observations, in-depth interviews, focus groups,
and surveys. Students also participate in a day-long health fair in a rural
community, and conduct research for two weeks on issues identified by the
local community as important. The program includes home stays with local
families and some Spanish classes. The course is open to students in
anthropology, public health, nursing, pre-med, and any other area related to
health. The course offers graduate and undergraduate credit, and has a cost
of: $4,992 for undergraduates and $5,562 for graduates excluding airfare For
